If you’re looking for somewhere to stay in Melbourne, you may want to take a look at Flag-Staff, the second poem from my virtual residency at the State Library of Victoria, Melbourne Unesco City of Literature. It draws on found words in an advertisement for Flag-Staff Inn taken from The Melbourne Daily News, December 27th, 1851 and Agoda, an online hotel booking site, from 170 years later, December 1st, 2021. I was amazed how the two sources compared when juxtaposed and the different nuances present in the way they advertised their Inns. Here it is:
