Past events

Thursday 8th December 2022: online keynote Fachtag lecture for English teachers and students at the University of Tuebingen, Germany:Words, Words, Words’: Writing, Finding and Translating Poetry. This will draw on my current research on Young Poets’ Stories, virtual residency with Melbourne, UNESCO City of Literature along with teaching workshop practices that enable young people to write found poetry and explore poetry in translation in ways that inform their understanding of poets’ word choices. 

Delighted to announce that Poetry Place the exhibition has a newly added venue at Arnold Library during the 2022 Inspire Poetry Festival. Opening times are Tuesday 13th September until Wednesday 19th October 9 – 6pm everyday except Sundays. If you’ve not had chance to see it yet, you could check it out in person or look online here.

Saturday 26th November 2022 2 – 3.45pm: I’ll be leading a writing workshop for Nottingham Poetry Society focusing on two main inspirations for writing poetry: Found Poetry and using archival photographs and maps. Each aspect will be introduced with reference to my recent work described above. The workshop will provide starting points for writing and opportunities to share rough drafts with others in the room within a safe, supportive and critical space. Room 3 at International Community Centre on Mansfield Road. Saturday 12th November 2022: keynote lecture at Re-imagining English, Re-connecting English teachers NATE Conference 2022 at Manchester Metropolitan University. The keynote will focus on findings from Young Poets’ Stories research and the implications these might have for other young writers. We will explore what we are learning about young poets’ writing and its relationship with their mental health along with the potential impacts of poetry mentoring and network opportunities as these young people develop their writing identities in the years after their success in the Foyle Young Poets’ Awards.

Friday 14th October 2022: keynote lecture on Making space for creativity within teaching practice and educational research at Institute of Education, Nottingham Trent University, CPD Partnership conference on Evidence informed practice.

Wollaton Poetry Festival, Poetry Aloud presents: I am performing new work along with Harinder Nagi at St Leonard’s Hall, Wollaton on 24th June 2022 from 7.30pm. There will be an open mic too. All Poetry Aloud presents events are in accessible spaces and presented as hybrid events. Further info to follow.

Poetry and Creativity lectures: I am honoured to be giving two keynote lectures in May 2022 as part of the Professional Teacher of Polish. Practice and Personalisation projects for the Faculty of Polish Studies at Jagiellonian University, Kracow, Poland. The first lecture entitled Poetry and Creativity (1): Poetry is a special club for everyone: Writing, performing and enjoying poetry is on May 9th online and I will give Poetry and Creativity (2): Reading poetry for pleasure and for assessment purposes online May 23rd.
