We, the naturally hopeful, / Need a simple sign / For the myriad ways we’re capsized. / We who love precise language

It is great to see Paul Violi’s fantastic poem is the Poetry Foundation’s poem of the day. Paul Violi was a fine poet whose work always makes you think and often invokes a wry smile. He once talked to me about the process of writing this poem and kindly shared drafts of it with me. The idea of an ‘inverted exclamation point’ was there in his notes and first prose draft which are reproduced in Drafting and Assessing Poetry (Dymoke, 2003 published by Paul Chapman/SAGE).
