The International Student Golden Shovel Poetry Competition is now launched, thanks to the sterling work of Peter Kahn and his colleagues. Full details and writing resources can be found here: https://www.roosevelt.edu/colleges/education/community-engagement/golden-shovel-competition
There are two divisions (12-18 and 18 -22 yrs ) with some great cash prizes and publication opportunities. The University of Arkansas Press will give free copies to the winners and runners-up and include their poems in a new edition of the highly acclaimed Golden Shovel Anthology. The Academy of American Arts will also publish the winning poems on their website. Submissions are open now and will close on February 1, 2018. Gwendolyn Brooks’ daughter—Nora Brooks Blakely—will be the final judge! Do encourage your students and young friends to enter and spread the word about this wonderful 21st century poetic form.
